South Africa: hospitals to be overwhelmed by Omicron cases

South African president Cyril Ramaphosa has said that the country is preparing for more hospital admissions, as the Omicron coronavirus variant continues to spread in the country.

President Ramaphosa says the number of daily infections has increased five- fold over the last week and has urged South Africans to get vaccinated.

The Head of the State has also encouraged for the preventive measures such as the use of face masks, social distancing and avoiding crowds to curb the spread of the virus.

South Africa has so far recorded 3.03 million cases of covid-19, including 89,966 deaths.
