Cameroon: the ruling party loses its allies

Two government ministers have left the ranks to announce their candidacies for the forthcoming presidential elections scheduled for October in Cameroon.

However, the presidential camp remains calm in the face of these two defections in less than a week.

Issa Tchiroma Bakary, Minister for Employment and Vocational Training, resigned from his post before declaring himself a presidential candidate under the banner of his party, the Front pour le salut national du Cameroun (FSNC).

48 hours later, the Minister of State, Bello Bouba Maïgari, also announced his candidacy under the banner of his party, the National Union for Democracy and Progress (UNDP), a long-standing ally of the party in power for almost 30 years.

The former had just been released from prison, while the latter had just returned from exile.

According to Fame Ndongo, head of communications for the ruling Rassemblement démocratique du peuple camerounais (RDPC), Paul Biya had long since deciphered the premonitory signs of these departures, which are part of the classic political game in an advanced liberal democracy.
