Thailand: Prime Minister suspended following audio leak

Thailand’s Constitutional Court on Tuesday suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, following the leak of an audio recording relating to the border dispute with Cambodia.

The court accepted the charges against Paetongtarn for her phone call with Cambodian strongman Hun Sen and suspended her from her duties as prime minister, reports stated.

The charges were brought by a group of senators who accused her of serious ethical misconduct and dishonesty in connection with the phone call.

The court order follows the leak of a phone call between Paetongtarn and Hun in which the Thai leader allegedly criticized her country’s military, in particular the commander of the army’s 2nd region, over escalating border tensions with Cambodia.

The decision came hours after King Maha Vajiralongkorn approved a cabinet reshuffle following the departure of a major party from the ruling coalition.

Paetongtarn, 38, daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, was elected after winning a parliamentary vote in August 2024, becoming Thailand’s youngest and second female Prime Minister.
