Kristy Coventry was sworn in as the new president of the International Olympic Committee on Monday, to mark the organization’s 131st anniversary.
She is the first woman and the first African to head the IOC. She replaces the German Thomas Bach.
Thomas Bach, Olympic team fencing champion in 1976, is stepping down after serving the maximum 12-year term.
The 71-year-old was presented with the Olympic Gold Order by Kristy Coventry.
Kirsty Coventry, 41 and two-time Olympic swimming gold medallist for Zimbabwe, had decisively won a seven-candidate election last March.
She will lead the IOC for the next eight years, including the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.
