Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, at the age of 80, will stand for re-election in the presidential elections scheduled for January 2026, his party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM), announced.
Museveni seeks to retain the positions of NRM chairman and the party’s presidential flag-bearer in the 2026 elections, the presidential party wrote.
President of the Republic of Uganda since 1986, Museveni is one of the longest-serving ruling leaders in Africa and the world.
His main rival, Robert Kyagulanyi, better known as Bobi Wine, a pop star turned politician, had already contested the results of the 2021 presidential election.
He finished second with 35% of the vote, while Museveni came out on top with 59%.
