At least 12 people died as a result of food poisoning on Saturday June 14 in a recreation area in Imerinkasinina, Antananarivo, Madagascar.
Nine of the deceased were patients admitted to the public hospital, while three others were being treated in other hospitals in the capital, according to HJRA Deputy Technical Director Rakotonaivo Mamisoa.
Thirteen people are still in critical condition, while 21 others are out of danger.
According to the testimony of the victim’s relatives, the first signs of intoxication, dizziness, vomiting, breathing difficulties and loss of sight appeared after some of the party guests had eaten the food.
The first victim was rushed to hospital during the party, but died en route. Other victims were successively rushed to hospital from Saturday evening until Sunday June 15.
A government delegation comprising the Minister of Public Health, the Minister of Communication and Culture, and the Minister Delegate for the National Gendarmerie visited the hospital late afternoon on Monday June 16.
Samples of the food consumed during the reception have been sent to the laboratory, reports said.
We already have some clues as to the origin of the poisoning, but we’ll have to wait for the investigation to be completed before drawing any conclusions, said the Minister of Public Health, Professor Zely Arivelo Randriamanantany.
The people who prepared the dishes are also being investigated by the police. For its part, the Ministry of Tourism has just published a decision announcing the closure of the establishment that hosted the birthday party, which reportedly does not have authorization.
