According to the World Food Program, nearly 28 million people are now facing acute hunger in the Democratic Republic of Congo, mainly in the east of the country.
“More than 10 million people in the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu and Tanganyika are facing acute food insecurity”, says the organization, calling on the international community to mobilize for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
This is the first time the country has reached this record figure. In three months, an additional 2.5 million people have fallen prey to hunger, warns WFP Regional Director Eric Perdison.
Over 90% of households in North and South Kivu are no longer able to meet their food requirements, and are forced to reduce the size and number of their meals, or go without the most nutritious foods.
The World Food Programme (WFP) needs more than 400 million US dollars to continue its emergency operations until next October.
