Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has decided to rename an emblematic thoroughfare in the capital, Dakar, known as boulevard Général-de-Gaulle, its new name. will now bear the name of Mamadou Dia, Senegal’s first head of government.
The announcement made during the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Thiaroye massacre perpetrated by the French colonial army in December 1944 has now materialized.
The decision was particularly significant, as it was taken just hours before the commemoration of the country’s independence on April 04.
The Independence Day parade will now take place on the newly renamed Boulevard Mamadou Dia.
According to reports, Independence Day will be marked by (this) decision concerning this emblematic axis of the capital. The artery leads to a giant obelisk symbolizing independence.
Mamadou Dia (1910-2009) is considered one of the fathers of independence, alongside Léopold Sédar Senghor.
