Nigerian singer Ayra Starr had a very different life on social networks before she became an afrobeats star because she was an online troll, managing a page dedicated to American rapper Nicki Minaj.
In Internet slang, a troll characterizes an individual seeking attention by creating negative feelings, or behavior aimed at generating controversy.
As a guest on the I Said What I Said podcast, hosted by Feyikemi Abudu and Jola Ayeye, the Rush singer said:
“I had a troll page, I had a Nicki Minaj fan page before I became Ayra Starr.”
This revelation amused her fans, especially as since her rise in the music industry, Ayra Starr has often been the target of criticism on social networks.
Since stepping into the spotlight, the Mavin Records singer has herself been the victim of online harassment, not least because of her bold clothing choices and onstage posturing.
Today, far from her troll past, she is concentrating on her flourishing career, having recently won the MOBO Awards 2025 in the Best African Artist and Best International Artist categories.
