In the Democratic Republic of Congo, volunteers are collecting weapons that may have been abandoned or distributed by the Congolese military when they withdrew from Bukavu.
These volunteers include children.
Since Monday February 17, dozens of volunteers have been criss-crossing the city of Bukavu to collect these abandoned weapons.
For Pastor Albert Migabo Nyagaza, who is coordinating the operation with some twenty neighborhood chiefs, time is of the essence.
“Today, we collected at least 200 weapons and took them back to the military camp. We also collected bombs, cartridges, military uniforms and Motorola radios,” the pastor said.
“The operation is not over yet. Heads of avenues continue to bring us weapons that were hidden. We regret that these weapons have ended up in the hands of children”, he added.
