In Rwanda, the epidemic linked to the Marburg virus, a cousin of Ebola, is officially over, the announcement being made after 42 days with no new cases.
The epidemic, confirmed on September 27, 2024, was the first of its kind in the country.
Out of 66 confirmed cases, 15 deaths were recorded, almost 80% of them among caregivers infected while treating patients.
It should be remembered that the Rwandan authorities, with the support of the WHO, deployed a comprehensive response: surveillance, screening, infection prevention, contact tracing, clinical care and awareness-raising.
These measures led to a 90% drop in cases by the third week.
The Marburg virus is highly virulent, but this outbreak recorded a relatively low case-fatality rate of 23%.
