Tourist dies after being ‘struck by lightning’

A 26-year-old British man died in Greece, visibly “struck by lightning”, while paddling, the Guardian and Sky News reported.

The victim, whose identity has not been made public, was in the water while his girlfriend filmed him from the beach, despite the bad weather.

“The lightning would have hit the water near the young man, causing him to fall into the sea and injure him,” explain the two British media.

Emergency services were called and quickly intervened, but failed to revive the tourist.

“We are supporting the family of a Briton who died in Rhodes and are in contact with local authorities,” the Foreign and Commonwealth Office told the Guardian.

An investigation has also been opened to determine the precise circumstances of the tragedy.
