Trump announces 25-40% tariffs on 14 countries

US President Donald Trump announced on Monday via social media that 25% tariffs would be imposed on imports from Japan and the Republic of Korea, respectively, from August 1.

In the letters to the President of the Republic of Korea and the Japanese Prime Minister that he published on Truth Social, Mr. Trump stated that the new tariffs would be separate from all other sectoral tariffs.

In the nearly identical letters, Trump said, “Please understand that the 25% figure is far below what is necessary to eliminate the disparity in the trade deficit we have with your country.”

Trump warned that if both countries raised their tariffs in response, the US would raise its tariffs by the same amount.

“As you know, there will be no tariffs if Korea or companies from your country decide to build or manufacture products in the United States and, in fact, we will do everything possible to get approvals quickly, professionally and steadily in other words, within weeks,” Trump wrote in one of the letters.

The president had previously indicated that he would send letters to a dozen countries on Monday.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Monday afternoon that Trump intended to issue an executive order to extend the pause on reciprocal tariffs from July 9 to August 1.
