The Nigeria Football Federation has announced the death of the former national team goalkeeper following a long illness.
Peter Rufai, 61, was part of the Nigerian team that won the African Cup of Nations in 1994 and the first qualification for the World Cup held in the USA the same year.
“We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian soccer and 1994 CAN champion,” the federation said in a statement.
The former Nigerian goalkeeper was one of the first African goalkeepers to play in Europe.
