Tinubu hands over to Maada Bio as head of ECOWAS

The Head of State of Sierra Leone, Julius Maada Bio, takes over the rotating presidency of the Economic Community of West African States following a vote organized during the 67th summit of Heads of State heldin Abuja, Nigeria.

For one year, he will have the onerous task of leading the 12 states that make up the sub-regional institution.

He succeeds Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of Nigeria, who during his term of office had to deal with the thorny issue of the Sahel states that have left ECOWAS.

“Our region is at a crossroads”, declared Julius Maada Bio, the new president of ECOWAS, after paying tribute to his predecessor for his work at the head of the organization, particularly in terms of regional dialogue, economic recovery and peace consolidation.
