According to a ranking drawn up by the Australian think tank Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), peace has deteriorated in more than half of the 50 African countries surveyed.
Sub-Saharan Africa is the region with the highest number of countries involved in conflict.
The Global Peace Index 2025 (GPI) studies peace trends in individual states, and is based on three criteria: the level of safety and security, the extent of ongoing national and international conflicts, and the degree of militarization.
