Niger: 34 soldiers killed in an attack

At least thirty-four Niger soldiers were killed and fourteen wounded in an attack on an army position in the Banibangou locality near the Malian border.

“This day, Thursday June 19, 2025, at around 9 a.m., the locality of Banibangou was the object of a cowardly and barbaric attack perpetrated by a horde of several hundred mercenaries aboard eight vehicles and more than 200 motorcycles”, according to reports.

Specifying that the Nigerien defense and security forces had reacted immediately , reports said that the death toll from the attack stood at thirty-four martyrs among the defense and security forces and fourteen wounded, and that several dozen assailants had been neutralized.

There were no immediate claims of responsibility.

Located in the Tillabéri region bordering Mali, Banibangou is home to a major Niger army base.

On April 25, at least twelve other Niger soldiers were killed in an attack by armed men in the same Tillabéri region.
