More than 700 people are still missing in the community of Mokwa, in Niger State, north-central Nigeria, following deadly floods.
The state governor, Umaru Bago, said, “at least 207 people had lost their lives in the floods”.
On May 29, the Mokwa region a strategic commercial crossroads between the merchant south and the agricultural north was submerged by uninterrupted rains for three days, causing a destructive flash flood.
President Bola Tinubu ordered the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and security forces to intensify search and rescue operations in the affected areas.
The governor said that over 3,000 households had been displaced.
“More than 700 people are still missing, and their whereabouts are unknown. The damage caused by these floods is immense”, said the governor.
He also confirmed the total destruction of 283 homes and 50 businesses.
Governor Bago also indicated that his administration was working with experts to identify the root causes of the disaster, pending the results of the technical assessment.
