Dozens of people died on the night of Friday June 14 after a particularly violent attack in the village of Yelewata, in the central Nigerian state of Benue.
According to several witnesses on the spot, armed men stormed the village, firing their weapons and setting fire to numerous homes.
Several eyewitness described the scenes as horrific, and put the death toll at around one hundred.
Regional authorities have confirmed the deaths of 45 people, but the police have yet to provide an official death toll.
According to reports, gunfire rang out throughout the night, and houses and stores were set on fire.
Many people were burned to death while sleeping inside their homes or stores.
Among the victims were entire families, soldiers, but also many displaced persons from surrounding villages who had taken refuge in Yelewata, precisely because of the upsurge in violence in the region in recent months.
