The President of Ghana has announced the introduction of a traceability system for Ghanaian gold refineries, in order to regulate an activity that is still very informal in the country.
This measure is part of a series of reforms designed to help Ghanaian gold refineries obtain the LBMA (London Bullion Market Association) license, a precious sesame for access to the major international markets.
Gold is Ghana’s main mining resource, but much of it is still mined artisanally and illegally. According to Interpol’s ENACT project, 85% of artisanal gold is mined outside the legal framework, representing a major loss of revenue for the country.
A training program will be launched in September to introduce artisanal miners to more modern, safer and environmentally-friendly techniques.
