Ocean Conference: Africa calls for seabed restoration

The Third United Nations Conference on the Oceans opened on June 9 in the port of Nice, France and over 120 countries are represented at this UN event, co-chaired by France and Costa Rica.

At a time when global warming is causing coastal erosion, the world’s oceans play a major role in climate regulation. West Africa is particularly concerned by this phenomenon.

Speaking on behalf of the group of African States, Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye stressed the need to restore the seabed: “The 30×30 objective, which aims to protect 30% of marine areas and zones by 2030, guides us in this ambition. But its success depends on a real, shared commitment. In this context, scientific cooperation and technology transfer are essential”, he declared.

It will also be necessary to combat illegal fishing, ban bottom trawling and strengthen the protection of marine protected areas around the world.

The UN Conference on the High Seas should enable 60 countries to ratify the treaty, a prerequisite for the entry into force of this text which has been negotiated over many years.
