This is the first time a Senegalese president has paid a state visit to the country since its independence in 1974 as he was welcomed with honor on his arrival in Bissau on Monday May 26.
The 24-hour state visit aims to strengthen economic and security cooperation between Senegal and Guinea-Bissau.
Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and his counterpart Umaro Sissoco Embaló held bilateral talks, followed by a joint press briefing.
“No country is more committed to the peace, stability and development of Guinea-Bissau than Senegal,” declared the Guinea-Bissau president as he awarded the Senegalese president the Amílcar Cabral medal, the Republic of Guinea-Bissau’s highest distinction.
This is official recognition of his commitment to regional integration, dialogue between peoples and stability in West Africa.
