South Africans voiced their support for President Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday after his confrontation with US President Donald Trump.
The South African leader used the meeting to refute baseless allegations about the persecution and murder of white farmers.
In his defense, Ramaphosa encouraged Trump to listen to his delegation. A strategy appreciated by Kyle Kemp, a resident of Johannesburg:
“I think President Cyril Ramaphosa represented the country well. I think the delegation, especially the one that he brought with him, was very strategic and I think all the members of that delegation gave their best for our country”.
Mr. Ramaphosa allowed professional golfers Ernie Els and Retief Goosen to speak in support of his remarks.
The South Africans, though delighted by their president’s attitude, did not fail to make a few suggestions. Gift Nxumalo, another citizen of Johannesburg, also reacted to the meeting.
“Even though I feel like he (Trump) didn’t give enough information about white genocide in South Africa, he (Ramaphosa) handled it very well and I think he should have told him that we have an inglorious history. And songs like Kill the Boer, Kill the Farmer are just struggle songs, struggle songs and it’s not like people are going to go out and kill anyone on the farm”.
South Africa’s black-led government is accused by the US president of seizing land from white farmers, and pursuing anti-white and anti-American foreign policies.
Mr. Ramaphosa rejected allegations of genocide in South Africa, which has a painful racial history.
Once an apartheid country, it was ruled by a white minority known as the Afrikaners.
The system of racist oppression ended three decades ago, but some tensions remain despite efforts at reconciliation.
