South Africa: 289 miners trapped in a gold mine

South African company Sibanye Stillwater said rescue operations were underway to extract 289 miners trapped in a gold mine in Kloof, near Johannesburg, according to reports.

The company spokesman, who confirmed the incident, said that all the workers are safe and sound, and have gathered at one of the deepest points of the mine located around 60 km west of the city, reports said.

While the details of the incident were not released, the mining company reassured that safety procedures had been put in place and that the shaft would be examined before the employees were brought back up, reports added.

The National Union of Miners (NUM) said it had received information about the incident, which occurred on Thursday night, earlier, and deplored Sibanye’s late reaction.

The Kloof 7 mine, an ultra-deep Witwatersrand gold shaft some 3,200 meters deep, accounts for 14% of Sibanye’s total gold production.
