Mass graves of civilians discovered in Sudan

The Sudanese army announced on Thursday the discovery of mass graves containing hundreds of civilians in Omdurman, Khartoum’s twin city.

According to a military statement, 648 people were being held by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in a school, in horrific and inhuman conditions in the Salha district of Omdurman.

“Around 465 people died and were buried in mass graves, some of which contained more than 27 bodies,” said the army.

For the time being, no reaction has been given by the paramilitary group regarding the army’s statement.

On Tuesday, the Sudanese army declared Khartoum completely liberated from the RSF after months of intense fighting.

Since April 2023, the RSF have been fighting the army for control of Sudan, resulting in thousands of deaths and creating one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

More than 20,000 people have been killed and 15 million displaced, according to the United Nations and local authorities.

However, research by American researchers puts the death toll at around 130,000.
