Cyril Ramaphosa meets Donald Trump

Since Trump’s return to the White House, South Africa has been negatively impacted by certain decisions as the South African leader landed in Washington on Monday in a bid to rekindle diplomatic ties.

The aim of this four-day working visit is to reset and revive bilateral relations between South Africa and the United States, according to a press release from the South African presidency.

On the economic front, the aim will be to persuade Washington to drop tariffs on South African imports and to maintain the AGOA (African Growth and Opportunities Act) trade agreement, which provides preferential access to the US market for many African countries.

With the country’s unemployment rate at around 32%, economic growth and job creation are priorities for the Ramaphosa government.
