More than 270 migrants rescued off the Tunisian coast

More than 270 migrants were rescued on Saturday May 17, 2025 in the Mediterranean by the Ocean Viking, according to reports.

On three occasions, the ship came to the aid of passengers on makeshift boats off the coasts of Tunisia and Malta.

Six children and three babies were among the dozens of people rescued yesterday by the Ocean Viking in the Mediterranean.

In all, 276 migrants from the Palestinian territories, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Guinea and Sudan.

Exhausted passengers aboard three different boats in distress, rescued in turn by the ambulance ship of the NGO SOS Méditerranée.

The Italian maritime authorities subsequently assigned the ship to the port of Ancona as a landing place.

The NGO regrets this decision, as it is some 1,500 km from the site of the last rescue.

This distance imposes an additional four days’ sailing on the survivors and distances the Ocean Viking from the areas where shipwrecks are most frequent.

In 2024, nearly 2,500 people disappeared or died in the Mediterranean, according to figures from the International Organization for Migration.

And already almost 500 since the beginning of this year.
