AI: towards tailor-made African regulations

As artificial intelligence transforms global economies, Africa is seeking to define its own regulatory path.

Franck Kié, founder of the Cyber Africa Forum, hailed the progress: Several countries, including Benin and Rwanda, have adopted national AI strategies.The African Union has also launched a continental initiative in 2024.

Catherine Muraga, Director of the Microsoft Africa Development Center, insisted on inclusivity: We are developing tools in Kiswahili, Amharic, Yoruba… so as not to exclude. Africa has almost 2,000 languages.

She stressed that responsible AI requires security and confidentiality right from the design stage.

The discussions highlighted the urgent need for Africa to accelerate its governance and investment in AI to avoid dependence on foreign technological decisions.
