Gabon: Ali Bongo and his family released from captivity

Former Gabonese president Ali Bongo Ondimba and his family have arrived in the Angolan capital Luanda, having been released five days after the release of Ali Bongo’s wife and son.

The announcement was made on Friday May 16 by the Angolan presidency, publishing photos on social networks.

“Following the initiatives of the President of the Republic of Angola and current Chairman of the African Union, João Lourenço, with President Brice Oligui Nguema of Gabon, the Bongo family has been released and has just arrived in Luanda,” said the presidency.

The move brings to an end 19 months of captivity in Libreville, following the coup d’état of General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema in 2023.

The Bongo family has been held since then.
