At least 23 people have been killed and many more wounded in attacks by gunmen in Benue state, central Nigeria, according to reports.
Ray Anumve, Kwande Local Government Area representative, said, the assailants were Fulani herders, engaged in itinerant cattle herding, who targeted several villages in the area.
He confirmed that 23 people had lost their lives, including children.
According to him, several dwellings were set on fire during the attacks, and the inhabitants food supplies were looted.
Violent clashes regularly break out between Fulani herders and farming communities in Benue state.
Last April, a similar attack claimed the lives of almost 100 people in the region.
Fulani herders, who migrate across the country to graze their cattle, claim that farmers try to steal their animals and target them.
