Government cuts foreign study grants in Nigeria

The Nigerian government announced on Wednesday the cancellation of a major scholarship program to study outside the country, believing it necessary to give priority to national education.

“All the courses Nigerians take abroad under the BEA are now available, and often of better quality, at our own universities and polytechnics”, explains the Nigerian Minister of Education, Morufu Olatunji Alausa, in a statement announcing the total cessation of this program.

However, he adds, students currently enrolled in the BEA program will receive funding until the end of their studies.

This decision is also the consequence of the economic crisis that has hit the country hard following the reforms undertaken by President Bola Tinubu.

Since coming to power, the Nigerian head of state has stepped up his economic reforms in a bid to turn around the public finances of the continent’s most populous country in the long term.
