Nigeria’s main opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), is losing members to the ruling APC, and 18 civil society figures published an open letter on April 27 accusing the Head of State of using fear and pressure.
According to the signatories, these rallies to the All Progressives Congress (APC) are the result of pressure exerted by the government to force opposition senators, governors and deputies to join the majority party.
These civil society figures, including senators, professors and NGO directors, denounce a systematic and calculated effort […] to dismantle democracy and turn Nigeria into a one-party state.
While this tribune has been welcomed by public opinion, a presidential spokesman denies all accusations of corruption, blackmail and manipulation of institutions to kill off the opposition.
“Democracy is strong and alive. Ignore the alarmists”, insists this adviser to Bola Tinubu, in a statement.
