Release of some fifty civilian and military figures

The Nigerien authorities have announced the release of fifty civilian and military figures in a decree signed by President Abdourahamane Tiani and read out on public television by Government Secretary General Mahaman Roufai Laouali.

Among the personalities released are several officers and men of rank implicated in the attempted coups of 2015 and 2021 against the regimes of former presidents Issoufou Mahamadou and Mohamed Bazoum.

The civilians include former ministers and senior civil servants close to Mohamed Bazoum, arrested in the aftermath of the July 26, 2023 coup.

The release of these civilian and military figures was a recommendation of the National Conferences held from February 15 to 19.

Following his inauguration as President of the Republic on March 26, President Abdourahamane Tiani signed a decree implementing this recommendation.
