Ghana: two dead after the collapse of a galamsey mine

Two individuals have lost their lives following the collapse of a galamsey pit in the Dadieso-Kwabenakrom area of the Suaman District in the Western North Region, Ghana.

The victims, 20-year-old and 25-year-old were engaged in illegal mining when the pit suddenly caved in, trapping them beneath the rubble, reports said.

Efforts by fellow miners and bystanders to rescue them proved futile due to the depth of the pit and the weight of the debris.

By the time emergency responders arrived, the two had already succumbed to their injuries.

Their bodies were later retrieved and transported to the Enchi Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and further examination.

The Assemblyman for the Suiano Electoral Area, Otoo Stephen, confirmed the incident and expressed concern over the increasing dangers associated with illegal mining in the district, Adom News said.

He noted that both victims were from the community, and their families are assisting the police with investigations.

Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies are expected to intensify efforts to clamp down on illegal mining operations in the district to prevent future tragedies.
