54 soldiers killed in Islamic militant attack

Cameroon: at least 12 soldiers killed in terrorist attack

At least 12 Cameroonian soldiers were killed in an attack by terrorists on the border with Nigeria, according to a communiqué from the Cameroonian Ministry of Defense.

“The attack in the Lake Chad region, near the town of Wulgo, also left more than a dozen soldiers wounded,” reports said.

The ministry did not give any further details on the identity of the attackers or the group to which they belonged, but suspicions point to the terrorist group Boko Haram, reports said.

The ministry said Boko Haram militants were increasingly equipped with advanced weapons and an apparent alliance with powerful outside criminal entities, which contributed to the attack, reports added.

Boko Haram, originally based in Nigeria, took up arms in 2009 to fight Western education and impose its doctrine. Today, the group has extended its actions to neighboring Chad, Niger and Cameroon.

Some 35,000 civilians have been killed and over 2 million displaced in north-eastern Nigeria alone.
