Pretoria wants to maintain good relations with Washington

Diplomatic relations between the two countries have deteriorated since Donald Trump’s return to the White House, with Washington first suspending US aid and then expelling the South African ambassador.

Despite these unfortunate incidents, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has indicated that improving relations with Donald Trump’s country is a priority.

Indeed, Washington is South Africa’s second-largest trading partner after China.

In a climate of appeasement, President Cyril Ramaphosa said he had noted the displeasure expressed by the United States, particularly with regard to the remarks made by the ambassador.

For the time being, engagement with (the US) continues. It will be done through representatives of business, labor and a large number of other interlocutors, as well as the government, assured the South African president.
