According to reports, one of Nigeria’s largest oil pipelines has exploded, even though it is essential for transporting oil in the Niger Delta, one of the country’s main sources of oil.
“A fire broke out on the Trans Niger Delta Pipeline operated by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) located on the border of the communities of Kpor and Bodo”, in the Niger Delta, police said in a statement.
During a routine night patrol, security officers saw the incident and immediately alerted SPDC management, who put in place the necessary security protocols, including the closure of the pipeline involved, it added.
Two people suspected of sabotage were arrested by police.
The situation is now under control and there is no longer any threat to residents or the environment, the statement assured, without giving details of any material or environmental damage linked to the fire.
The Trans Niger Pipeline (TNP) transports crude oil from onshore fields in southern Nigeria to the Bonny export terminal in offshore Nigeria.
Oil leaks are a frequent occurrence in the region, due not only to poor pipeline maintenance but also to acts of vandalism.
Armed groups, as well as local residents, regularly siphon crude from pipelines belonging to the major oil companies, which they then refine on illegal sites and sell on the black market.
