Only five Africans feature in the list of the world’s 100 highest-paid sportsmen and women in 2024 published by the Sportico website, headed by Cameroonian basketball player Joe Embiid, who earned a total of $58.40 million.

He won the gold medal at the 2024 Olympic Games with the USA, beating France in the final.

He overtakes Egyptian footballer Mohamed Salah, whose total earnings are set at $55 million in 2024. In the soccer category, the Liverpool player is the highest-paid African in 2024 and the second-highest-paid African sportsman.

In third place comes Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez, who plays for Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahli, with an overall income of $52 million.

Next in line is Senegal’s Sadio Mané, who also plays in the Saudi league for Al Nasr, with a total income of $45.5 million in 2024.

Finally, another Cameroonian basketball player by the name of Pascal Siakam closes the Top 5 with a total income of $42 million.

These five sportsmen and women total $253 million in 2024.
