The Somali army on Tuesday neutralized 16 al-Shaabab terrorists in an operation in the Hiiraan region, according to reports.
The army and local forces carried out a large-scale operation in the region to repel the al-Qaeda affiliated al-Shabaab terrorist group, reports said.
Somali security forces took control of several strategic sites, including Beera Yabaal, Buur Abooto, Eega Galmaay, Jidcilaan and Cadow Gureey.
The army said its ongoing operation was aimed at freeing Somalia entirely from extremist groups and ensuring lasting peace and security for its population.
This country in the Horn of Africa has been plagued by insecurity for years, with the main threats coming from al-Shabaab and the terrorist group Daech.
Since 2007, al-Shabaab has been fighting the Somali government and the African Union peacekeeping forces present in the country.
