A recent report by the Institut National de la Statistique et des Etudes Economiques et Démographiques (INSEED), carried out with the support of the World Bank, indicates that the country recorded progress in reducing multidimensional poverty between 2018-2019 and 2021-2022.
The incidence of multidimensional poverty is based on the proportion of households deprived of more than 33% of basic indicators (health, education, living conditions). This figure has fallen from 37.1% to 28.9% in recent years.
It should be noted that the incidence of multidimensional poverty in Togo is based on the same dimensions as the global MPI produced by the UNDP, with certain indicators adapted to the national context.
More concretely, a decline of 8.2 percentage points indicates that around three out of ten households were affected by this type of poverty in 2021-2022.
Poverty intensity, which reflects the severity of deprivation, has also fallen, from 0.168 to 0.127 over the period.
However, geographical disparities still exist between rural areas, where the incidence remains high at 45.0%, and only 7.5% in urban areas.
