Cameroon: Paul Biya unveils his ambitions

In power since November 1982, Cameroon’s Head of State is preparing to run for an umpteenth term, despite his advanced age and the deafening protests of his detractors.

“The Head of State, His Excellency Paul Biya, is the candidate of the Far North region for the next presidential election”, Cavayé Yéguié Djibril, President of the National Assembly, publicly declared on January 18.

At the age of 90, Cameroon’s President Paul Biya has decided to stand for re-election in the October 2025 presidential election.

In 41 years in power, “President Biya embodies a political stability that reassures part of the population, but he is also criticized for a management style considered rigid and centralized”.

Paul Biya’s supporters greeted the announcement with jubilation, while the opposition pointed out the shortcomings, notably the political and security crises in the country.
