The Archbishop of Antananarivo, Mgr Jean De Dieu Raoelison, takes over the presidency of the Ecumenical Council grouping Madagascar’s four major Christian Churches, against a backdrop of a rift between State and Church.
In recent years, the Malagasy Catholic Church has always demonstrated a diplomatic and conciliatory stance on the political life of the island.
It played a major role during the crises of 91, 2002 and 2009, which led to sudden regime changes.
But in recent months, the bishops have changed their tune. They have begun to point out the shortcomings of the current regime, in particular the water and electricity problems which have not been resolved after so many years; which the bishops consider a form of indirect homicide.
To those who still dare to claim that the country is progressing and that the leaders are efficient. Are there people who are paid to praise the leaders while being indifferent to the suffering of the people?
The Catholic Church will be at the helm of the ecumenical body for the next 12 months.
