Washington condemns both belligerents

A few days after sanctioning the paramilitary leader, the United States announced sanctions against the head of the Sudanese army, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, on Thursday January 16,while regretting that Washington’s efforts had failed to bring an end to the conflict ravaging this East African country.

“Taken together, these sanctions underscore the U.S. view that neither man is fit to govern a peaceful future Sudan,” said Antony Blinken.

As the Biden administration withdraws, Antony Blinken expressed his real regret at having failed to end the war in Sudan, despite his strong involvement in the issue.

The US Secretary of State is counting on President-elect Donald Trump’s administration to achieve this.

He insisted that the United States remains committed to holding accountable those responsible for atrocities in Sudan and to supporting a democratic and civilian transition.

For the Sudanese Foreign Ministry, US sanctions are “immoral and express only confusion and a weak sense of justice”.

In Sudan, civilians are paying the heaviest price in the conflict that has pitted the army led by General al-Burhan against the paramilitary RSF since April 2023.
