Thousands of migrants expelled to Niger

A total of 31,404 migrants were expelled by Algeria to Niger last year, a figure that is well up on the 26,000 migrants in 2023, according to the annual report by the NGO Alarme Phone Sahara.

The organization also denounces the inhumane conditions in which expulsions take place.

Migrants are sometimes abandoned in the middle of the desert, on the border between the two countries, and then have to walk several kilometers to reach the locality of Assamaka on the Niger side, reveals the NGO.

Once in Niger, many of them find themselves stranded in localities in the Agadez region, where the camps run by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) are sometimes saturated, while some arrive sick, injured or exhausted.
