At least 95 people have been confirmed dead and 130 are injured after a major earthquake struck the mountainous Tibet region of southern China on Tuesday, according to reports.
The earthquake struck the town of Xigaze, in the Xizang autonomous region, Tibet’s local name, at 9:05 am local time (01:05 GMT) at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Local government officials travelled to various municipalities to assess the impact of the quake, while the Chinese military sent a drone to monitor the epicenter after the quake.
In addition, the US Geological Survey recorded a magnitude of 7.1.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered the authorities to step up rescue efforts to find and save people trapped under the rubble.
The Western Command of the People’s Liberation Army, for its part, has prepared its disaster relief contingency plan, including transport, medical aircraft, helicopters and ground forces to support rescue operations.
