A colleague of President-elect John Dramani Mahama in the December 7, 2024 elections, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang becomes the country’s new Vice-President.

After standing as a candidate in the 2020 general elections, this emblematic figure of Ghana’s academic and political world is placing her term of office under the banner of promoting the rights of women and girls.

“Our victory is a victory for everyone, but especially for our daughters and our women”, she declared as soon as the results were announced by the electoral commission.

In 2020, John Dramani Mahama, then a presidential candidate, described her as an outstanding scholar, a diligent public servant and a role model.

A former Minister of Education, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang is an academician whose academic career illustrates her commitment to education and culture.

At 74, she made history as the first woman to hold the position of Vice-Chancellor of a public university in Ghana, leading the University of Cape Coast from 2008 to 2012.

Internationally, Ghana’s new vice-president has served as Ghana’s Representative to Unesco and more recently as Chancellor of the Zimbabwe-based African Women’s University.
