Niger: BBC radio programmes suspended

The Niger authorities have announced the suspension of the programs of the British radio station BBC, accused of broadcasting false information.

By decision of the Ministry of Communication, Posts and Digital Economy, the programs and transmission and reception media of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) are suspended nationwide, with immediate effect and for a period of three (3) months, said a statement from the Niger Ministry of Communication broadcast on public television on Thursday evening.

“BBC is broadcasting false information aimed at destabilizing social tranquility and undermining troop morale”, added the same source, without however specifying the nature of the information broadcast by the media.

Earlier, the Nigerien government had deplored the coverage of the terrorist attacks in Niger by certain media and on social networks.

In the wake of this, it decided to lodge a complaint against Radio France Internationale (RFI) for incitement to genocide and intercommunity massacre.

The BBC is the third Western media outlet whose programs have been suspended in Niger since the July 26 coup d’état against President Mohamed Bazoum, after the French media RFI and France 24.
