Mpox: the spread of the virus declines in Africa

In Africa, the rate of spread of Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is slowing slightly, although the epidemic continues to progress.

The information was revealed by the African Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), an autonomous continental health agency of the African Union.

These are the latest figures released on November 7 by the CDC.

According to this autonomous continental health agency of the African Union, 11,450 new cases have been recorded in the last four weeks, compared with 12,800 in the previous four weeks.

A slowdown indeed, but the epidemic continues to progress, warns Jean Kaseya, Executive Director of the center.

“In April, when we organized the first meeting to alert the international community to the presence of Mpox, we had only six countries affected and 300 deaths. By August, we had 13 affected countries, 23,000 cases and 600 deaths. But today, the number of cases has doubled, with over 1,083 deaths and 19 countries affected.”

As the epicenter of the epidemic, the DRC alone accounts for 80% of cases.

“Vaccination began there a month ago, but remains limited,” laments Africa CDC.

Mpox not only spreads from animals to humans, but is also transmitted between humans, causing fever, muscle pain and skin lesions.
