Niger: death of former Prime Minister Hama Amadou

Niger’s former Prime Minister and former President of the National Assembly Hama Amadou passed away on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, his relatives announced.

“Hama Amadou died at the Niamey reference hospital,” according to reports.

Born in 1950 in Youri, Hama Amadou held key positions in Niger’s institutions. He was Prime Minister twice: from February 21, 1995 to January 27, 1996 under President Mahamane Ousmane, then from December 31, 1999 to June 7, 2007 under President Mamadou Tandja.

At the age of 74, Hama Amadou held several ministerial posts during the era of the Supreme Military Council (1974-1987).

Following the first democratic elections in 1993, he became Prime Minister under the banner of his political party, the Mouvement national pour la société de développement (MNSD-NASSARA).

As head of government, he lived through crucial political periods, helping to stabilize and reform the country.

According to reports, he remains an emblematic figure on the Nigerien political scene.
