Cameroon: Paul Biya returns after 49 day’s absence

The President of the Republic of Cameroon returned home on October 21, 2024, after several days in hospital abroad since September 2.

The Cameroonian presidential couple Paul and Chantal Biya landed this afternoon at Yaoundé’s Nsimalen international airport. Paul Biya and his wife arrive in Cameroon after an officially unjustified 49-day absence.

Having left Cameroon on September 2, Paul Biya took part in the Sino African Forum held in Bejing. The Cameroonian head of state was then due to attend the 79th UN General Assembly, chaired by his compatriot Philemon Yang, as well as the Francophonie summit.

But the 91-year-old was conspicuous by his absence. According to a number of media reports, this was due to health problems which forced him to be hospitalized in Geneva.

Officially, the Cameroonian authorities denied reports that the president had been hospitalized.

However, there were several indications that Paul Biya was in poor health. Back in Cameroon, the 42-year president is expected to focus on a number of urgent issues. In particular, the transition within his CPDM party.
